2010년 5월 7일 서오릉에서 미국인 안내가 있었다. 미리 예약된 손님이어서 준비가 필요했다.

40인 정도의 한국인과 미국인 반반씩이면 난처하다. 우선 영어로만 말하기로 마음을 결정했다.

정해진 시간 안에 어디에서 무슨 말을 해야 할까를 선별하고 원고를 준비해야 한다.

읽을 것인가 말로 할 것인가도 정하고 말 할 소재도 골라야 한다.

 

정문에서는 큰 그림 간판을 보면서 서오릉 개요를 원고로 짧고 간략하게 읽었다.

재실과 은행나무는 지나면서 말로 하고 홍살문에서는 한 사람이 익명의 서양 묘비명 원고를 읽게 했다.

그리고 왕릉이 왜 세계문화유산으로 지정되었는가를 세 가지로 나누어 설명했다.

정자각에서는 문화체험을 시켰다. 한 사람씩 계단을 합보로 천천히 오르게 했다. 오른 다음에는

제사의 절차를 영신, 진찬, 송신, 음복으로 나누어 설명했다.

 

능침에서는 조선의 조상에게 묵념을 시켰다. 모두를 앉게하고 한국인은 우리말로

미국인은 영어로 원고를 읽게 했다. 원고는 헨리 워드워즈 롱펠로우가 지은 "인생찬가" 이다.

국군방송 아래 싸이트 5번 항목을 보니 합보하는 장면이 나온다. 나는 목소리만 크게 나오고 능침에서

시를 낭독하는 장면도 동영상으로 나온다.

서오릉 정문에서

Welcome to this place 서오릉 ! We have 8 grave areas here. All of them are royal families

of 조선 Dynasty, the former Kingdom of Korea which lasted 519 years under 27 Kings

until she fell into Japanese control in 1910. The Kings, his consorts and concubines were

buried in each tomb. From the 15th century in 1457 they began to bury here.

These tombs area has been inscribed on the list of Unesco's world cultural heritage

in June 2009 year.

Start with yourself.

The following words were written on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop in the Crypts of Westminster Abbey:

When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.

As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat

and decided to change only my country. But it seemed immovable.

 

As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family,

those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it. And now as I lie on my deathbed,

 I suddenly realize : If I had only changed my self first, then by example I would have changed my family.

세계문화유산이 된 이유

Let me explain you the reason why they designated tombs as world's general valued heritage.

The 1st reason is a total of 40 tombs spanning 27 generations of 조선 Kings and Queen's are preserved intact.

 2nd they made the tombs and architecture according to Feng-shui theory and in accordance with the harmony

of neighbouring nature. 3rd grand traditional rituals are held still in the royal tombs each year

in commemoration of the deceased royal family members.

 

They are also unique historic relics full of artifacts that demonstrate in every detail The glorious 조선 era.

You may see the granite stone sculptures at the tombs. It was followed by the rules of the times

representing humble and solemn King.

 

홍살문

This is the main gate of this tomb. This symbolizes you are entering the sacred area.

They painted this pillar in red colour. That's why they thought the bad monster dislike this colour

so this red could expel the evil spirits.

 

정자각

This is the building where they held the ritual procedures of offering foods and sharing the spiritual

relationships. As you might know Koreans were influenced by Confucius teaching. Confucius taught us

 that we should obey old people and give them respects to our ancestors and so on.

 

Most of the Koreans continue the customs of offerings even at home nowadays.

 Even today confucian ancestral worship is still prevalent and filial piety is highly revered

as virtue in Korean society.

 

인생찬가

A Psalm of Life

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,                           슬픈 사연으로 내게 말하지 말아라.

"Life is but an empty dream !                                 " 인생은 한갖 헛된 꿈에 불과하다고 !

For the soul is dead that slumbers,                         잠자는 영혼은 죽은 것이어니

And things are not what they seem.                         만물은 외양의 모습 그대로가 아니다.

 

Life is real ! Life is earnest !                                    인생은 진실이다 ! 인생은 진지하다 !

And the grave is not it's goal;                                  무덤이 그 종말이 될 수는 없다.

"Dust thou art, to dust returnest,"                            "너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가리라."

Was not spoken of the soul.                                    이 말은 영혼에 대해 한 말은 아니다.

 

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,                              우리가 가야할 곳 또한 가는 길은

Is our destined end or way;                                    향락도 아니오 슬픔도 아니다.

But to act, that each to-morrow                               저마다 내일이 오늘보다 낫도록

Find us farther than to-day.                                     행동하는 그것이 목적이요 길이다.

 

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,                               예술은 길고 세월은 빨리 간다.

And our hearts, though stout and brave,                 우리의 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하나

Still, like muffled drums, are beating                         싸맨 북소리처럼 둔탁하게

Funeral marches to the grave.                                 무덤 향한 장송곡을 치고 있느니.

 

In the world's broad field of battle,                            이 세상 넓고 넓은 싸움터에서

In the bivouac of Life,                                               인생의 노영 안에서

Be not like dumb, driven cattle !                                발 없이 쫓기는 짐승처럼 되지 말고

Be a hero in the strife !                                             싸움에 이기는 영웅이 되라.

 

Trust no future, howe'er pleasant !                           아무리 즐거워도 "미래"를 믿지 말라 !

Let the dead Past bury it's dead !                             죽은 "과거"는 죽은 채 매장하라 !

Act,- act in the living Present !                                  활동하라, 살아있는 "현재"에 활동하라!

Heart within, and God o'erhead !                              안에는 마음이, 위에는 하느님이 있다.

 

Lives of great men all remind us                               위인들의 생애는 우리들을 깨우치느니,

We can make our lives sublime,                               우리도 장엄한 삶을 이룰 수 있고,

And departing, leave behind us                                우리가 떠나간 시간의 모래 위에

Footprints, on the sands of time;-                             발자취를 남길 수가 있느니라.

 

Footprints, that perhaps another,                              그 발자취는 뒷 날에 다른 사람이,

Sailing o'er life's solemn main,                                 장엄한 인생의 바다를 건너가다가

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,                           파선되어 버려진 형제가 보고

Seeing, shall take heart again.                                  다시금 용기를 얻게 될지니.

 

Let us, then, be up doing,                                         우리 모두 일어나 일하지 않으려나,

With a heart for any fate;                                           어떤 운명인들 이겨낼 용기를 지니고

Still achieving, still pursuing,                                    끊임없이 성취하고 계속 추구하면서
